Managing the land in a changing climate: adaptation sub-committee progress report 2013

This report examines what steps are required to ensure the land can continue supplying important goods and services in the face of a changing climate – specifically supplying food and timber, providing habitat for wildlife, storing carbon in the soil and regulating water flows, and coping with sea level rise on the coast.

The report is divided into six chapters: (i) chapter one introduces the goals of the report and methodologies used in the research; (ii) chapter two discusses the limitations of soil productivity and water availability in the agriculture sector and advises farmers to incorporate technological advancements into their adaptation plans; (iii) chapter three assesses the vulnerability of wildlife to climate change, the ability of wildlife to adapt, and policy recommendations for the protection of wildlife; (iv) chapter four assesses the vulnerability of upland peat to climate change, the climate resilience of upland peat, and policy recommendations for the protection of peatlands; (v) chapter five assesses the vulnerability of coastal habitats to climate change, the climate resilience of coastal habitats, and policy recommendations for the protection of coastal habitats; (vi) and chapter six explains the role of the adaptation sub-committee in the United Kingdom's National Adaptation Programme and delivers the committee's overarching conclusions from the 2013 report.
