HelpAge International has been working since 1983 to improve the lives of disadvantaged older people, through a global network that today spans more than 100 affiliate organisations in over 65 countries.
Disaster Reduction Goal
HelpAge International builds the resilience of older men and women to the impacts of natural crises including the global challenge of environmental degradation and climate change. HelpAge International recognises that older people have specific vulnerabilities and needs. At the same time their localised environmental knowledge and ways of coping with increased disaster risks related to climate change and environmental degradation could provide understanding on the prevention, preparedness and mitigation on disasters at the community level.
Policies and Programmes in DRR
HelpAge International DRR work includes:
- Research and evidence gathering to understand better the impact of hazards on older people.
- Development of programmes and alliances to build older people's resilience and capacity.
Advocacy and policy development to press for older people's inclusion in environment and natural hazard, DRR and climate change related interventions and budgets.
