CAFOD exists to bring about lasting and positive change in the lives of some of the world's poorest and most disadvantaged people. CAFOD does this by working with local partner organisations across the world. Although CAFOD supports many diverse humanitarian and development programmes it has thematic expertise in DRR, livelihoods, HIV, advocacy, Gender, Water Resource Management and WASH.
- Promote an analysis of potential hazards and vulnerabilities in development programming
- Ensure that development and humanitarian programmes do no harm by inadvertently increasing vulnerability or disaster risks
- Integrate DRR and climate change adaptation methodologies
- Reduce community vulnerability to the impact of disasters
- Strengthen community capacity to cope with the effects of a disaster
- Strengthen the advocacy role of communities/partners in DRR
- Link community based efforts with local, national and international level advocacy
- Integrate emergency response capacity into long- term development programming
CAFOD currently supports over 30 DRR initiatives which are improving the disaster resilience. This is on top of the worldwide mainstreaming of a disaster resilience approach throughout CAFOD’s development and humanitarian programmes.
CAFOD’s DRR strategies:
- Ensure that all CAFOD disaster relief and rehabilitation programmes are designed to contribute to sustainable development and to reduce future risk.
- Promote a community-focused approach, whereby community based DRR activities and experience are linked with local, national and international policies and practice.
- Support partners in local, national and international advocacy initiatives to raise the profile of DRR as a means to reduce the vulnerability of communities and the impact of disasters and to lobby governments and donors for inclusion of DRR analyses and initiatives in countries identified as highly hazard prone.
- Work within CAFOD and partner networks to promote and improve DRR approaches and seek new complementary partnerships to expand experience and increase programme impact.
- Participate in interagency groups to share good practice in DRR and to jointly advocate for increased government and international donor focus on DRR - including links to climate change

The Sendai Framework Voluntary Commitments (SFVC) online platform allows stakeholders to inform the public about their work on DRR. The SFVC online platform is a useful toolto know who is doing what and where for the implementation of the Sendai Framework, which could foster potential collaboration among stakeholders. All stakeholders (private sector, civil society organizations, academia, media, local governments, etc.) working on DRR can submit their commitments and report on their progress and deliverables.
