Mission

Global Hand (www.globalhand.org) is an online “matching” service supporting for-profit and non-profit organisations who wish to partner in addressing global challenges. It has a number of different research foci, which include disaster risk reduction.

Disaster Reduction Goal

Global Hand is seeking to increase private sector involvement in disaster risk reduction through facilitating partnerships with the public sector.

Policies and Programmes in DRR

Global Hand has partnered with UNISDR to publish a CEO brief on the business case for disaster risk reduction (DRR). Global Hand has also produced a collation of material related to public-private partnerships in DRR and published a paper summarizing current thinking in the field of DRR partnerships. Furthermore, Global Hand hosts a public website that matches partnerships between nonprofits and the private sector, which includes components to encourage DRR partnerships.

Membership in Key Networks

- ECOSOC special consultative status
- Global Compact participant
- Global Reporting Initiative organisational stakeholder
- Member of ALNAP - Active Learning Network for Accountability and Performance in Humanitarian Action

Making disaster risk reduction a policy priority, institutional strengthening (HFA 1)

Through the publication of a CEO brief on the business case for disaster risk reduction (DRR), Global Hand seeks to strengthen corporate policy and engagement in DRR.

Risk assessment and early warning systems (HFA 2)

In line with the Hyogo framework, Global Hand is encouraging the private sector to engage in disaster risk reduction (DRR) through public–private partnerships. The primary vehicle for this is the Global Hand website, designed to facilitate partnerships in a wide range of activities, including DRR partnerships to implement early warning systems.

Education, information and public awareness (HFA 3)

In line with the Hyogo framework, Global Hand is seeking to promote the establishment of public–private partnerships to better engage the private sector in disaster risk reduction. The primary vehicle for this is the Global Hand website, which has been designed to facilitate partnerships in a wide range of activities, such as risk reduction educational and awareness raising initiatives.

Preparedness for effective response (HFA 5)

Global Hand is encouraging the private sector to engage in disaster risk reduction through public–private partnerships, as per the Hyogo framework. The primary vehicle for this is the Global Hand website, which has been designed to facilitate partnerships in a wide range of activities. Traditionally, partnerships have occurred more frequently in the area of disaster relief than risk reduction. Global Hand actively encourages those engaging in disaster response through the Global Hand website to consider including preparedness and other elements of DRR in their relief activities.
