Georgia participated in EFDRR Open Forum 2017

On 26-28 March, 2017 Georgia participated in the European Forum for Disaster Risk Reduction (EFDRR) Open Forum in Istanbul, Turkey.

The Georgian delegation was represented by Rusudan Kakhishvili, a Senior Adviser to the National Crisis Management Center of the Office of the State Security and Crisis Management Council of Georgia/National Focal Point for Sendai Framework, Guliko Zumbadze, a Member of the Tbilisi City Council, Nikoloz Kuchaidze, a representative of Emergency Management Agency of the MIA of Georgia, and Teona Julukhadze, a representative of ASB Georgian Office.

Ms. Rusudan Kakhishvili was one of the speakers at the Technical Session on Risk Assessment and Disaster Loss Database, introducing the reforms, which Georgia undertakes towards disaster risk reduction.

In the beginning of 2017, the Government of Georgia has approved the National Disaster Risk Reduction Strategy and Action Plan 2017-2020. Currently, the country is elaborating a Disaster Loss Assessment and Recovery System and developing an Early Warning System.

The 2017 EFDRR Open Forum was held from 26-28 March 2017 in Istanbul, Turkey. As a requirement of the Sendai Framework, one of the aims of the 2017 EFDRR Open Forum was to share experiences, lessons learnt, and gap analyses for the 2017 Global Platform (22-26 May 2017, Cancun, Mexico). 

The Sendai Framework for Disaster Risk Reduction 2015-2030 provides for the development of mechanisms for disaster risk management at all levels (global, regional, national and local). The document defines seven global goals that have to be achieved in 2020-2030, including substantial reduction of global disaster mortality and the number of affected people, reduction of disaster loss and damage to critical infrastructure, increase of the availability of- and access to multi-hazard early warning systems, etc.

The EFDRR Open Forum was organized by the UNISDR and hosted by the Government of Turkey.
