Canada: Emergency Management Office (EMO) to get new flood-risk tool

Emergency officials in Nova Scotia will soon have more information to better warn people about devastating flooding that may happen when a storm surge is predicted, as it was for this week’s nor’easter.

In a few months, they will have access to a web-based coastal flood-risk tool for storms posing a threat to coastal regions, or for assessing risk of long-term sea-level rise around the Maritimes.

Expected to launch in April, the application uses existing high-resolution lidar surveys the group had conducted in coastal areas to develop flood-risk maps with a view to adding more maps in the future.
