$6.4m disaster management deal between Fiji and Japan
Disaster risk management equipment will be provided to Fiji by the Japanese government, reports The Fiji Times. The $6,403,415 value equipment, which is to be installed by 2014, will strengthen communications structure for remote areas the disaster management capacities of the responsible government departments.
"It will assist in providing effective data, weather forecasts and warnings in timely manner which will mitigate the impacts of natural disasters like tsunamis on the communities of the South Pacific," said deputy secretary for Transport and Energy Malakai Tadulala. He added that "It is critical that an effective forecast and early warning system is in place for preparedness, better resilience and risk management."
