Pakistan: Glacial outburst poses threat to Chitral

Source(s): Dawn Media Group

Glacier lake outburst flood (GLOF) risks to communities need to be reduced in the Hindukush-Himalya region, warned experts at the workshop titled ‘Reducing risks and vulnerabilities from glacier outburst floods in northern Pakistan’ organised by GLOF Project, reports Dawn.

“Many other valleys are endangered by GLOF, which is a climate-induced phenomenon,” stated an expert from the GLOF Project. Speakers at the workshop also emphasized that communities in GLOF-prone mountain valleys were highly vulnerable to the disaster. They highlighted the importance of raising awareness in the region.

A $4.1 million project has been launched in Droongagh valley in upper Chitral to aid local communities in reducing flood risks. In addition, it is aiming to help people in the project area to minimise losses to their properties, lives and livelihoods in case of flood.
