Philippines: Mass killing of 100 mangrove trees ignite call for nationwide ban vs. cutting

A fishermen's alliance, Pambansang Lakas ng Kilusang Mamamalakaya ng Pilipinas (Pamalakaya) protested following the recent cutting down of dozens of century old mangrove trees in Quezon province, near Manila.

“It is about time that Philippine legislation seriously considers the ban on massive cutting of mangrove trees by the national and local governments and their aquaculture clients. These mangrove trees serve as natural barriers to phenomenon like climate change, storm surge, sea-level rise to mention a few. For the information of Aquino and the Department of Environment and Natural Resources, mangrove forests help significantly in reducing disaster risks and help communities improve resilience to natural disasters. Do we have to tell them all the time?," asked Pamalakaya vice chairperson Salvador France.
