Description

The American Red Cross Southeastern Pennsylvania (SEPA) Chapter helps young people build the skills and knowledge to prevent, prepare for, and respond to emergencies through two main program areas: Red Cross Clubs and Community Disaster Education presentations. The Youth Services Facilitator will work in both these program areas.

In partnership with the School District of Philadelphia, SEPA Chapter offers the Red Cross Clubs (RCC), an after-school program, where high schools students develop knowledge and skills in life-saving trainings and serve their communities. The RCC model involves a core group of students in each high school, who, under direction of Red Cross staff and Teacher Sponsors, receive training in HIV prevention education, Disaster Preparedness, First Aid/CPR/AED, leadership styles and techniques, and International Humanitarian Law.

These students then are encouraged and guided in developing and sharing what they have learned with peers and the overall community through school-wide presentations, including “Red Cross Days,” service projects, and other events during the school year and in the summer.

The Youth Services Coordinator leads the after-school program in at least four Philadelphia public high schools. In addition to planning and attending club meetings, the Facilitator performs program administration tasks and builds relationships with school staff and community resources

Be Red Cross Ready/Community Disaster Education presentations teach young people from pre-Kindergarten to 12th grade how to be safe and prepared for emergencies. Presentations on fire prevention, water safety, making disaster plans and ready kits, and basic first aid are generally 45 minutes at schools, community and faith-based organizations, daycare/pre-schools, libraries, scout meetings, etc. throughout most of the five county Southeastern PA region.

After being trained, the Youth Services Coordinator will conduct Be Red Cross Ready presentations, with colleagues or independently, as needed, generally during school day hours.
