Job summary
The WHO Collaborating Centre CRED (www.cred.be), located within the School of Public Health of the University of Louvain in Brussels, focuses on research and training for public health and epidemiology of natural disasters and civil conflicts. It works closely with several UN agencies, the European Commission, World Bank and other universities and research organisations in Europe, US and developing countries. It maintains, however, its strong independent position in regards to publication and analysis.
With the support of the US Government, CRED has developed and maintains two international reference web databases on disasters and conflicts. Their websites and databases require enhancements and analysis to respond to the growing international demands for data and detailed country information.
The vacant position is for a second full time IT Specialist (with a minimum of 3 to 5 years of experience) within the context of the Centre’s two major database projects on natural disasters and conflicts.
The successful applicant will work within a small, dynamic and multi-cultural team consisting of open-minded and creative analysts, epidemiologists and IT experts, receive day to day supervision by the programme head and report to the Director. The job may involve international travel for research, conference presentations and teaching.
The resources (software and hardware) required for an effective accomplishment of the job will be provided.
Key responsibilities
- Programming and maintenance of databases;
- Maintenance and enhancement of websites, development of web tools and pages;
- Software development;
- Maintenance of the Centre’s servers and network.
Minimum job requirements
Good knowledge of databases, including Sun MySQL, the SQL language and Microsoft Access. Experience with Geographic Information Systems (GIS) and data visualization is an asset. Sound knowledge of web technologies, including (X)HTML, CSS, JavaScript and PHP. Experience administering a Content Management System (CMS) is an asset. Experience administering GNU/Linux and Windows operating systems. Interested in technological advancements and new tools, proactive, able to show independent initiative in the development of solutions. Must take initiative and be self-directed. Fluent English and knowledge of French are prerequisites for this position.
