Parliamentarian session on linking climate change adaptation and disaster risk reduction

To elevate the efforts in disaster risk reduction, the World Bank, the UN, and 17 major donors created the Global Facility for Disaster Reduction and Recovery (GFDRR) in September 2006.

GFDRR helps disaster-prone countries reduce their vulnerability by providing technical and financial support for risk reduction and accelerated recovery. GFDRR works closely with the World Bank regions, UN agencies, and client governments to mainstream disaster risk reduction in country assistance and poverty reduction strategies.

During the 8th Annual Conference of the PNoWB, the GFDRR is organizing a session on ‘The Role of Parliamentarians in Linking Climate Change Adaptation and Disaster Risk Reduction’, this session aims at engaging with parliamentarians to shape and influence the international disaster risk reduction agenda.

Expected outcomes of the session include:

• Raising awareness among parliamentarians from more than 50 countries and regional organiza-tions on the need of reducing the risk of disasters to safeguard lives and development gains;
• Raising awareness of the World Bank’s work in disaster risk reduction and present new method-ologies and instruments for mainstreaming DRR in low and middle income countries;
• Building on the Manila consultative roundtable with parliamentarians, stepping up the dialogue with parliamentarians to engage them in advancing the disaster risk reduction agenda through climate change adaptation and identifying upcoming opportunities for advocating with interna-tional network/platforms of like-minded parliamentarians.
