Disaster risk reduction: A road of opportunities - Call for submissions

The Youth Science Policy Interface Publication captures and promotes the role of young people in sharing knowledge of evidence-informed best practices, role of science and technology, emerging trends, challenges, and solutions in the implementation, monitoring, follow-up and review of inter-governmentally agreed frameworks on sustainable development. This initiative is part of the UN MGCY Science Policy Interface Platform and coordinated by the UN MGCY.

The UN MGCY is the General Assembly mandated space for the meaningful engagement of young people in intergovernmental and allied UN processes related to sustainable development.

This an open call for all interested people 30 years or below to submit a policy brief / article to include in this DRR Edition of the Youth SPI Publication, titled "Disaster Risk Reduction: A Road of Opportunities" to be launched at the 2017 Global Platform for Disaster Risk Reduction in Cancun, Mexico.

Deadline for submitting is April 9th, 2017 to allow for adequate time to compile submitted works, have them peer reviewed by other young scientists, and formatted for this special edition.

Objectives of the publication

• Share knowledge generated by multi-sector young and early career scientists, engineers, practitioners, and policy makers relevant to the science-policy-practice nexus for achieving the SFDRR.
• Establish coherence with other implementation frameworks (e.g. 2030 Agenda, COP21 Paris Climate Change Agreement, New Urban Agenda, etc.) to support implementation of the SFDRR.
• Contribute formally to the ongoing cycle of policy design, implementation, monitoring, follow-up & review, through evidence-informed analysis of cross-cutting issues within the priority areas of the SFDRR:
  • Priority 1: Understanding disaster risk.
  • Priority 2: Strengthening disaster risk governance to manage disaster risk.
  • Priority 3: Investing in disaster risk reduction for resilience.
  • Priority 4: Enhancing disaster preparedness for effective response and to “Build Back Better”
• Highlight inter-linkages between different thematic issues and identifying emerging challenges/opportunities
• Exchange of best practices in evidence-based and data-informed sustainable development
• Promote cross-disciplinary and collaborative research, as well as qualitative and quantitative analysis

This special edition of the Youth SPI Publication will take the form of a magazine, containing a series of brief articles highlighting important topics and trends within disaster risk reduction, with the goal of presenting it at the 2017 Global Platform for Disaster Risk Reduction.

The publication is online. In case resources are available, several paper versions will be printed for distribution during the 2017 Global Platform for Disaster Risk Reduction.
