Women in Pakistan’s drought-struck Tharparkar District are shouldering the burden of a long dry spell that is wreaking havoc across the desert region, and proving themselves resilient and resourceful, reports IPS. Women often bear the brunt of natural disasters since they are responsible for the upkeep of the household and the wellbeing of their families.

According to David Line, managing editor of the Economist Intelligence Unit, this makes it essential to "realise the tremendous capacity for leadership women have in planning for and responding to disasters" and to consider their rights in disaster risk reduction (DRR) and resilience-building efforts.
