Sendai talks establish targets to reduce damage from natural disasters
Megan Rowling reports for the Guardian on the adoption of the Sendai Framework for Disaster Risk Reduction, a 15-year plan that will replace the existing 10-year blueprint.
She notes that 'experts described it as a leap forward', but also that 'some were disappointed that earlier proposals for percentage goals were rejected,' and replaced with targets to lower the global mortality rate from disasters between 2020 and 2030, and reduce the proportion of people affected. It also aims to reduce economic losses in relation to global GDP by 2030.
