Reducing and managing risks of disasters in a changing climate

This article provides an insight on the impact of natural disasters around the world. It introduces WMO disaster risk reduction priorities (2012-2015): (i) Risk assessment; (ii) Early warning systems; (iii) Risk reduction in climate-sensitive sectors; and (iv) Risk financing and transfer. It presents rankings of disasters according to the number of deaths and economic losses both global and regional level.
The whole issue addresses the discussion on the practical aspects and implementation of the Global Framework for Climate Services (GFCS). It also provides an overview of the capacity development programmes developed to support the initial GFCS priority areas.
