Learning lessons in the Philippines
Mark Goldring, Chief Executive at Oxfam, writing for the Huffington Post, compares Typhoon Haiyan, which devastated so much of the Philippines, to past disasters. He questions the international action on whether it can support the local, and remember the long-term. Asserting that "aid must not only be sufficient but effective, appropriate and accountable," Mark Goldring recalls that the "tremendous need to do better and support communities own relief and recovery efforts, and... to invest much more in disaster risk reduction and preparedness" was already highlighted in the main evaluation of the Indian Ocean tsunami.
