In the context of the implementation of the UNISDR-WMO project “Building resilience to disasters in Western Balkans and Turkey” UNISDR is supporting the attendance of South Eastern Europe (SEE) mayors and city representatives at the 2013 Global Platform for Disaster Risk Reduction (DRR) in Geneva (May, 2013). The Global Platform for DRR offers to the participating mayors and city representatives a venue for networking and information sharing on disaster risk prevention and mitigation policies at the local level and an opportunity to exchange with their peers on good practices to promote resilient urban communities.

Taking the opportunity of the presence of the SEE mayors and city representatives at the Global Platform for DRR, UNISDR Europe is promoting an open debate on “Disaster risk reduction measures at the local level in South Eastern European countries”.

The debate provides the chance to the invited SEE mayors and city representatives to discuss with the public:

a) the main disaster risks faced in relation to natural hazards in your cities and communities
b) the prevention and risk reduction measures adopted by your local administration to mitigate the impact of disasters
c) the main challenges and the lessons you have learnt in managing disaster risks that your city can share with other cities
