Philippines: St. Bernard town competing for 2013 UN Sasakawa award

The town of St. Bernard in Southern Leyte, Philippines is competing for the prestigious 2013 United Nations Sasakawa Award for Disaster Reduction. Rosalinda Jane Araneta, the Municipal Disaster Risk Reduction and Management Council (MDRRMC) Public Info Team Chair/ Tourism Operations Officer, told Sun Star that St. Bernard is honored to be part of the event for its opportunity of “sharing and recognizing practices” to attain safer communities.

The 2013 UN Sasakawa Award for Disaster Reduction will be awarded this May to an individual or institutions that have initiated active efforts in reducing and advocating disaster risk reduction in their respective communities. This year’s theme is “Acting As One,” with a prize money of US$50,000.
