Vanuatu named number 1 for disaster risk
The United Nations University's 2012 World Risk Report identified Vanuatu as the country with the greatest risk of natural disaster. The country is often hit by cyclones and is vulnerable to the effects of climate change and natural disasters.
The Launch of the report was timed to be on the same week as the International Day for Disaster Reduction, whose theme this year is 'Women & Girls: The [in]Visible Force of Resilience'.
"Women and girls are up to 14 times more likely to die during a disaster and that's often purely the result of inadequate access to education and awareness messages. It's very important to try and change that," Senior program officer with aid agency CARE Australia, Stefan Knollmayer told Radio Australia.
