Storm surges: how to get better prepared

Storm-surge early warning system, public awareness and disaster preparedness measures help reduce the effects of cyclones, such as Nargis, that hit Myanmar on 2 May.

Weather related hazards can be detected and monitored, and if enough data are collected and the population at risk is appropriately warn in advance, human lives losses can be strongly reduced.
