Background

Save the Children works in more then 120 countries. In East & Southern Africa ( ESARO), Save the Children coordinates programmes in 9 countries. It is our intention to focus increased effort on making positive and lasting change for children across the region. Save the Children is looking to fill the position of Regional Nutrition Advisor.

Duties and responsibilities

• The Advisor will provide nutrition technical support to specific Save the Children country offices that will enable high quality nutrition related programmes to achieve innovation in approach, rigour in evidence and nutrition outcomes at scale.
• The 4 specified country programmes in East Africa are Kenya, Somalia, South Sudan, and Ethiopia, with additional support as requested to country programmes in Southern Africa.
• Support will involve technical assistance for the delivery of direct nutrition interventions (including the treatment of acute malnutrition, infant and young child feeding promotion and support, nutrition education and micronutrient supplementation) and indirect nutrition interventions (including food security and livelihoods including cash and social protection) to promote nutrition sensitive development.
• Technical assistance will encompass both programme delivery and advocacy for national policy level development and change. It will also cover emergency/humanitarian and development phases, promoting emergency preparedness and disaster risk reduction where possible.
• Specific accountabilities include support to assessment, strategy development, proposal writing, programme monitoring and evaluation, programme implementation, staff recruitment, capacity development, knowledge management, representation and networking.

Person Specification

• Internationally recognised third level qualification in nutrition (MSc in public health nutrition or equivalent)
• Minimum 5 years of relevant work experience in nutrition programme management (including CTC/CMAM programmes) in the context of international development as well as emergencies, including the management of budgets and personnel, in low- or middle-income countries
• Expertise or understanding of technical issues around policy and programming to support the integrated treatment of acute malnutrition within health systems.
• Thorough understanding of approaches to protect, promote and support optimal infant and young child feeding and infant and young child feeding in emergencies.
• Experience in working in emergencies, transition and development contexts.
• A clear commitment to, and experience of, developing and coaching professional and national staff, combined with the ability to give direct actionable feedback.
• The inter-personal skills to influence and guide Country Senior Programme Managers and Country Directors managers in identifying programming opportunities and resolving programme challenges, and to work in a collaborative manner within the Regional Office team.
• Successful track record in programme management and fundraising from international donors.
• Strong analytical and conceptual skills and the ability to think and plan strategically.
• Ability to successfully work with minimal administrative support.
• Fluency in written and spoken English and report writing skills in English, including demonstrable capacity in proposal writing.
• IT skills (Microsoft Word, Excel, Power Point, Outlook, Epi-Info-6, SMART/ENA).
• Willingness/ability to travel to country offices and field locations (up to 40% of time).
• Commitment to Save the Children’s mission and values.
