Summary

The Information and Communications Technology and Disaster Risk Reduction Division (IDD) of United Nations Economic and Social Commission for Asia and the Pacific (ESCAP) is working on a new initiative called the Asia Pacific Gateway on Disaster Risk Reduction and Development (Gateway) which is a website focused on promoting mainstreaming disaster risk reduction (DRR) into
development planning in the Asia‐Pacific region.

Responsibilities

- Collecting DRR information for the Asia‐Pacific region, which will include identifying organizations, projects/initiatives, documents and training materials
- Helping collate DRR information on resources and services on different sectors / issues / methods and tools into which DRR can be mainstreamed into development planning
- Profiling National Disaster Management Organisations / Authorities and potentially other line ministries and NGOs working on DRR
- Assisting with identifying potential partners for leading online discussions and providing online support. Included in this would be supporting outreach activities to potential users and stakeholders.
- Assisting with the design and build of the Gateway online (for which training will be provided)

Learning opportunities during the course of the internship:
- Knowledge of disaster risk reduction in the Asia Pacific Region, and how this links to economic and social development
- Experience of assisting the research and analysis process for collating information on mainstreaming DRR into development
-General understanding of the work of ESCAP in disaster risk reduction, and of the role of regional cooperation
- Insight into the management of ESCAP’s Asia Pacific Gateway on Disaster Risk Reduction and Development
- Training on website management
- Opportunity to attend staff meetings and upcoming events related to DRR
- Knowledge on data exchange between different websites
- Ability to communicate information to policy makers/decision makers who are interested in mainstreaming DRR into development
- Ability to deliver a project within time constraints in a diverse team setting

Education

- Students currently enrolled in a master degree or PhD programme (or equivalent) in disaster management, development and information and communications technology, or other related fields.

Indicative skills and qualifications

Essential:
- Excellent communication skills in English. Ability to convey and adapt messages to a range of audiences
- Knowledge of disaster risk reduction and development issues

Desirable:
- An interest in the Asia‐Pacific Region
- Knowledge of information and communications technology
- Some related work experience
- Knowledge of website management
- Knowledge of regional languages including Russian and Chinese
