Washington Post: Haitian earthquake had little impact on country's ecosystem
Nina Shen Rastogi of the Washington Post reports that the damage to ecosystems is not only an environmental concern but also a safety hazard. She stresses the need to make long-term capital investments in for example, safer, sturdier buildings. She also recommends the need to shift from short-term crisis management to long-term environmental planning.
According to Ms Rastogi the challenge now is to figure out how to incorporate earthquake-related reconstruction into Haiti's overall rehabilitation plan in order to develop natural resource management programmes aimed at reducing poverty and restoring the ecosystem.
