Advancing disaster risk reduction workshop

This two day workshop provides a basic orientation on what disaster risk is and how it can be managed in the context of sustainable development. The workshop aims to familiarize participants with disaster risk reduction concepts and guidance, including the Hyogo Framework for Action (HFA). The workshop builds upon participants’ existing knowledge base so they can in practice relate disaster risk reduction issues to their daily work responsibilities.


Workshop Objectives

  • Discuss what constitutes disaster risk and how it links to sustainable development.
  • Introduce and discuss how to reduce disaster losses and manage risks.
  • Illustrate the role of different stakeholders and the scope of different sectors in reducing disaster risk.
  • Review the International Strategy for Disaster Reduction (UNISDR) system.
  • Discuss the relevance and progress of the Hyogo Framework for Action within the national context, including roles of different actors.


Workshop Outcomes

  • Common knowledge base established that applies to the multi-sector and multi-dimensional nature of disaster risk.
  • Increased knowledge of key concepts and principles for disaster risk reduction and its link to sustainable development.
  • Increased appreciation for how different professional disciplines relate to and can engage in disaster risk reduction.
  • Familiarization with the Hyogo Framework for Action and with the UNISDR system.
  • Exchange of ideas on how to apply the workshop content to participants’ own context, including how to engage with others on this topic.
  • Consolidated national picture of disaster risk reduction within the context of the Hyogo Framework for Action.


The workshop materials will be piloted in Jamaica.
