International Tsunami Awareness Day - Guided Tours and Conference

The Spanish Institute for Disaster Reduction, CEIMAR (Cádiz University) and Federation of Neighbors "5 de Abril" have organized a conference and two guided tours to explain the effects of the tsunami of 1755 in the city of Cadiz, Spain, to coincide with World Tsunami Awareness Day 2017.

On October 31, the first route will visit the San Sebastian Castle and the streets of La Viña neighborhood, where the miracle of the retreat of the sea took place in this zone most exposed to the impact of the tsunami.

On November 2, several experts from Cádiz University and Spanish Institute for Disaster Reduction will gather at the conference. They will present the latest knowledge on tsunami risk, the effects of the Lisbon earthquake & tsunami on the Cádiz coasts, essential aspects of emergency planning in Spain and the possible effects of climate change on coastal risks and extreme wave events.

On November 3, a second tour will be guided through the center of the city, between the neighborhood of Pópulo and Santa María, explaining the reaction of the population in their flight from the city after the strong earthquake that frightened the population.
