3rd European Climate Change Adaptation Conference

The theme of ECCA 2017 is ‘Our Climate Ready Future’. The vision of the organisers is that this conference will inspire and enable people to work together to discover and deliver positive climate adaptation solutions that can strengthen society, revitalise local economies and enhance the environment.

It will bring together the people who will deliver action on the ground - from business, industry, NGOs, local government and communities - to share knowledge, ideas and experience with researchers and policymakers. Set in the cultural city of Glasgow, at the heart of a city-region that is putting climate adaptation and climate justice at the core of decision-making, ECCA 2017 offers a unique opportunity to visit many innovative local adaptation projects and share experience of how climate adaptation can work in practice.

ECCA 2017 is held in Europe but the focus will be global. Participants from over 60 countries on five continents have already registered their interest or submitted abstracts, and we expect the presentations and sessions to be fully international in scope.

Sessions

ECCA 2017 is organised into four types of session:

• Practice sessions (to enhance engagement and learning between policy, practice and business communities);
• Science-practice sessions (to enhance engagement and learning between science and practice);
• Science sessions (presenting advances in scientific methods, tools and findings relevant to climate adaptation in practice);
• Poster session to take place at the drinks reception and whisky tasting on Tuesday evening, with posters displayed throughout the conference.

Themes

The organisers aim to cover the full range of topics linked to climate change adaptation, based around 8 cross-cutting themes and 5 sectoral themes:

• Cross-cutting:
  1. Evidence for action: data, climate services & communication;
  2. Planning ahead: delivering resilience in the face of climate uncertainty;
  3. Business and finance: mobilising investment in climate change adaptation and building low carbon, climate resilient economies;
  4. Making it happen: organisations, policy, governance, justice & ethics;
  5. Working together: co-production of knowledge between science, business, policy, practice and local communities;
  6. Adaptation in practice: case studies, monitoring, support tools and guidance;
  7. Global challenges: climate adaptation and the UN Sustainable Development Goals;
  8. Whole system sustainable solutions: acting across multiple sectors and scales.

  1. Urban, energy & infrastructure;
  2. Agriculture & forestry;
  3. Water security & flooding;
  4. Biodiversity, ecosystem services & nature-based solutions;
  5. Health & wellbeing.

Programme

The conference will open with a civic reception at the historic City Chambers in the centre of Glasgow on the evening on Monday 5th June. After the opening plenary session on Tuesday morning, and a stimulating day of parallel sessions, delegates can relax at a poster drinks reception with whisky tasting on the evening of Tuesday 6th June.

The conference dinner will take place at the stunning Kelvingrove Art Gallery and Museum on Wednesday evening.

On Thursday and Friday, excursions are scheduled to showcase a range of inspiring adaptation projects and cultural sites across the region. This will be an unmissable opportunity to meet the people behind the projects, and exchange experience and lessons learned.
