Date

In celebration of the International Day for Disaster Reduction (IDDR) on 13th of October 2016, the World Association for Sustainable Development (WASD), the Arab Urban Development Institute and the UN Major Group for Children and Youth/Young Scientists Platform on DRR are working together to promote meaningful and self-led youth engagement for a culture of risk-awareness in developing countries.

Theme

This event will introduce the burdens faced by young people in regards to natural and manmade disasters, stressing that these burdens pose huge challenges for the youth and more importantly undermine development efforts in all sectors of social, economic, cultural and environmental sustainability.

Objective

The session will explore the unique role that youth can play, and the value they can add as innovators, scientists, inter-cultural ambassadors, peer-to-peer trainers, community mobilizers and advocates for vulnerable people. The empowerment of youth will be essential to implementing the Sendai Framework for Disaster Risk Reduction 2015-2030, reducing mortality rates and improving resilience in the lead up to World Conference for DRR and beyond.

Target audience

The audience can be composed of youth and experts from disaster management agencies, United Nations agencies, Non-Governmental Organisations, civil society groups, businesses, academic and other stakeholders.
