Youth Division's Lecture Meeting on Technical Hazard

Organizer(s) Soka Gakkai International
Venue
Toda Memorial International Hall of SGI
Date

This year marks the 60th anniversary of the official discovery of Minamata disease, which affected south-western Japan. The disease was caused by the release of methylmercury in the industrial wastewater from a chemical factory. It sparked debates on "industrial disasters" and brought about some legislative regulations in Japan afterwards. Local residents affected by the disease were divided into numerous silos according to their attitude towards the factory, relevant lawsuits, and the government's remedy among others. Even today, such division still carries negative effects in society.

What's Included

In this lecture meeting, an NPO activist and a local youth elaborate the history and current efforts of preventing industrial disasters.

Intended Audience

This meeting is organized by the youth division of Soka Gakkai Japan but is open to all generations. It will be delivered in Japanese, with English interpretation.
