ORGANIZER(S): Malteser International
Type: Training Course Date: 12 - 22 Jan 2016 Location: Viet Nam
A basic technical training on DAISY (Digital Accessible Information System) was delivered to 5 members of Lift You Up group (LYU) in Hanoi by senior trainers from ATDO (Assistive Technology Development Organization), a member organization of the DAISY consortium from Japan. The training session formed part of the project "Building capacity and removing barriers of people with disabilities to learn about Disaster Risk Management (DRM) through accessible digital information systems in Vietnam" funded by UPS foundation and implemented from January to June 2016.
LYU members were taught how to use essential software for developing a variety of DAISY formatted material (example: including Obi, Tobi, Save as DAISY Translator, publishing software). They were also introduced the website of DAISY consortium (www.daisy.org) to keep track with the news on latest software. Most importantly, the LYU members used the essential software to practice the actual production of the Malteser International manual on disability inclusive community-based disaster risk management (DiCBDRM) developed in collaboration with their DPO partners.
LYU members now know how to convert the normal DiCBDRM manual into DAISY format, including techniques such as developing a comprehensive navigation structure, and inserting captioned pictures or complicated tables, etc. Ms Dao Huong, Leader of Lift You Up group, said: “The training is useful because now we know how to convert many kinds of books into DAISY books that are accessible to blind people”.
By the end of the training session, a plan for the production a DAISY DiCBDRM manual in English and Vietnamese by mid-April was developed. Once the DAISY DiCBDRM manuals are available, a workshop will be organized to launch these accessible books for the use of stakeholders working in disaster risk reduction and people with disabilities.
