12th Annual Canadian Risk and Hazards Network Symposium

The Anatomy of Disaster Resilience: Searching for new treatments to enhance mitigation, planning, response and recovery.

This symposium intends to deconstruct disaster resilience through a multifaceted discussion of the factors that contribute to disaster, and how these factors could be addressed through the mitigation, preparedness, response, and recovery phases.

Disasters are never simple occurrences, nor are they brought about by a single most-visible agent. Improved understanding of ‘hidden’ components – including the making of vulnerability and resilience - and how their interplay contributes to these complex events would enable a better design and implementation of the various tasks of emergency management.

The program of the 12th Symposium includes a field trip, discussion groups, plenary and targeted sessions. It will appeal to people from many disciplines, sectors (private, academia, government, community, and voluntary), and operational level (local to international).

Programme

The programme will be presented along the following tracks:

• Hazard and risk analysis: Understanding disasters beyond “what first strikes the eye”
• Mitigation vs disaster response: commonalities vs points of departure, and where it pays off to invest
• Emergency planning: how do we shift the paradigm from “understanding backwards” to “living forwards”?
• Resilience and Recovery: understanding disasters’ cause and effect, and “bouncing forward”

Abstracts and special sessions on a broad range of topics related to the above general themes are encouraged. Themes to be addressed include:

• Evolving theories, policy and regulations of hazards and risks
• Emergency management: a vision for the future
• Risk reduction and adaptation to climate and severe weather
• Public health risks and emergencies
• Technological risks and engineering
• Critical infrastructure risks and protection
• Demographic and culture changes: implication on risk
• Cyber security disaster-related risks and vulnerabilities
• Aboriginal disaster resilience in Canadian and international contexts
• Communicating risks to the public (and public warnings)
• Building societal resilience
• Building supply chain resilience in modern economies
• Canada and post Hyogo Framework of Action
• Information and knowledge management for disaster risk reduction
• International perspectives on risk management and disaster risk reduction

Submission information

Prospective presenters are encouraged to submit abstracts of proposed presentations and special sessions through this CRHNet Symposium website (presentations; special sessions). Each accepted presentation will have a maximum of 30 minutes for delivery and discussion. Poster viewing is available for one day with a set period for authors to be at their posters to answer questions and for discussions.

Digital records of accepted presentations will be shared with participants

Contributing to a disaster-resilient society through inter-disciplinary and inter-jurisdictional dialogue and collaboration among practitioners, policy makers, researchers, and academics.
