The International Workshop on Tsunami Inundation Mapping

East Asian countries have suffered serious loss as a result of marine natural disasters such as the tsunami that hit Japan caused by the Great East Japan Earthquake in March 2011, and the surge that hit the Philippines caused by Typhoon Yolanda in November 2013.

Marine natural disasters, such as tsunami's and storm surge's, are common threats among coastal states and have been for many years. These disasters have caused serious loss to coastal states by claiming many lives and devastating the local economy and environment. Therefore, public awareness, preparedness and regional cooperation on marine natural disaster is important. Tsunami inundation maps are some of the useful tools for public awareness and preparedness against tsunami and storm surge disasters.

This workshop aims to improve the capacity of Hydrographic Offices, predominantly in East Asian countries, to develop and utilize tsunami inundation maps. It will also facilitate discussion on the way forward through reports on the latest knowledge and technology and through sharing experiences and challenges among the participants.
