Integrative Risk and Disaster Management – Towards Resilient Cities

IDRC Davos 2016 with its various formats will again address different risk topics, cross-cutting themes and instruments focusing on urban areas and promoting resilience in cities. How to make cities less vulnerable for the many threats respectively how to increase resilience to make cities a safer place will be key questions.

The conference outcomes shall contribute to a successful implementation of the Sendai Framework for Disaster Risk Reduction 2015-2030 to reduce disaster risks from all natural, biological, technological and social hazards and risks. It will also integrate approaches to adaptation to climate change based on the outcome of the UN COP 21 Conference in Paris. Latest research findings, case studies and best practices, and results-based science and technology programmes and initiatives shall be presented and discussed to improve the cities’ resilience.

Main topics to be addressed in the context of urban areas are:

  • Natural hazards
  • Technological risks
  • Environmental/Biological risks
  • NaTech risks
  • Critical infrastructures
  • Terrorism
  • Sovereign risk financing tools, insurance
  • Harmonization of DRR and climate change adaptation

Main cross-cutting themes to be addressed in the context of urban areas are:

  • Vulnerability and resilience
  • Safety and security
  • Education, training, capacity building
  • Equity and inclusion in DRR (gender, disabilities, migration, etc.)
