Adaptation Futures is the biennial conference of the Global Programme of Research on Climate Change Vulnerability, Impacts and Adaptation (PROVIA). In 2016 the European Commission and the Government of the Netherlands will co-host the fourth edition.

Adaptation Futures 2016 is where scholars, practitioners and policymakers go to connect, learn and inspire. It highlights adaptation practices and solutions for people, governments and businesses. The programme will address all sectors and all parts of the world, with a special focus on urban and coastal areas.

Programme

The worldwide conference on climate change and adaptation, Adaptation Futures 2016, will be held from 10 to 13 May 2016 in Rotterdam, the Netherlands. This four-day event will offer many possibilities to meet, mingle, inspire and develop partnerships. Until 15 March 2016 you can register at a lower, 'early bird' fee.

Adaptation Futures 2016 offers an exciting and timely opportunity to exchange new and practical ideas, experiences and insights on climate change adaptation. The conference aims to move climate change adaptation forward by promoting solutions across sectors, borders and communities and engage scholars, practitioners, policymakers and business people from around the world.The conference combines discussion of the latest adaptation research with an Adaptation Practice Expo and Business Fair. At the Business Fair knowledge based supply will be connected to practitioners’ demand. It will contain stands, matchmaking facilities and signing ceremonies. At the Expo cutting edge adaptation projects are shown.

The programme of the conference will offer a variety of plenary and parallel sessions, round tables, excursions, exhibition, side events and back to back meetings. The three plenary events will feature top-level speakers. In smaller sessions, you can engage in discussions about science, policy, finance, business and the practice of implementation:

- Practice sessions: sharing good practices and tools in adaptation, lessons learned, evaluations methods and other issues of interest to practitioners and scientists

- Science–practice sessions: sharing experiences among scientists and practitioners about co-creating adaptation knowledge and exploring boundaries of science and practice 

- Science sessions: presenting and discussing innovative approaches, perspectives, methods, tools and findings that advance the adaptation knowledge base

- Round tables: moderated discussions involving government officials, business representatives, policymakers and civil society

In addition, you can explore the project exhibition and business fair, meet entrepreneurs and enjoy works of art. 

Abstracts and sessions

The call for abstracts and sessions is open until 4 October. You can submit an abstract or session under the ten themes and cross-cutting issues:

Grants
If your university or your employer is not able to fund your registration, travel and/or lodging, you can apply for a grant for the AF2016 conference. Applications for an AF2016 grant will only be accepted when all four requirements are met:

1. You are:
- From a Low-income, or a Lower-middle-income economy (LIC/LMIC) according to The World Bank listings for LIC or LMIC
- Representing a start-up SME from an EU Member State or Associated Country

2. You give an active contribution to the conference, meaning:
- Your science abstract has been accepted for a presentation or a poster
- You are a presenter, chair or facilitator in a science-practice or practice session
- You have an active role in the business fair or project exhibition

3. There is no other organisation that can fund your participation

4. You are able to give references, e.g. from your university professor or from the director of your organisation
