Purpose

The Workshop will develop policy recommendations for improved community resilience based on the current state-of-practice, innovative engineering solutions, and new and emerging technologies. A special focus of the Workshop will be on the means to build resiliency, reduce economic losses, and speed recovery and reconstruction following typhoons or hurricanes, earthquakes, and other natural disasters.

Workshop Program

The Workshop program has been designed for practicing engineers, researchers, planners, policy makers, and other risk reduction specialists. The format will include technical presentations, panel discussions, and policy-development discussions. Technical sessions are planned on the following topics:

  • Risk identification and reduction:building rating systems and retrofit ordinances
  • Performance-based engineering: new and emerging concepts
  • Multi-hazard resiliency modeling and resiliency-based design
  • Reconstruction and recovery processes: economic impacts, functionality, and infrastructure improvements
  • Humanitarian engineering: the role of engineering and technology in less-developed communities
