'MENA DRR Network' consultation on the post-2015 Framework for DRR ('HFA2')

Eleven international agencies engaged in supporting disaster risk reduction in the Arab States and members of the Middle East and Northern Africa DRR Group (MENA DRR Network) met on 23 October 2013 in Cairo to review progress in implementing the Hyogo Framework for Action in Arab States and to provide suggestions for the post-2015 international framework for DRR (“HFA2”).
The organization of this consultation was agreed upon at the previous Network meeting to:
- Leverage on the wide range of experience of international partners promoting DRR in the region to contribute to the global and regional discussion on what the future framework for DRR should be (SWOT)
- Use the opportunity of the DRR in Arab States Group for an open dialogue to share perceptions and perspectives, but mostly to suggest what from participants’ perspectives could really help advance DRR for resilience building in the region
- Use findings of the day to improve not only future frame for DRR but also to contribute to improve implementation of DRR until 2015 including through closer inter-action among agencies in support of beneficiary countries
To do so, participants reviewed and discussed UNISDR ROAS presentation to recall the global process engaged towards definition of the new framework. They also reviewed and discussed global and regional recommendations emanating from over 90 consultative meetings so far and particularly from the 1st Arab Conference on DRR (Regional Platform) held in March 2013 in Aqaba, Jordan. After these introductions, participants split in two working groups to discuss and later present in plenary key elements for “HFA2” by theme aligned with the HFA’s five Priorities of Action, related to the current framework’s priorities of action: progress and challenges and related suggestions.
The internal meeting report presents the summary assessments and recommendations of MENA DRR Network members recorded during this consultation and has been shared with participating agencies
