Mississippi disaster resilience seminar
The Mississippi Chapter of the United States Green Building Council will host three seminars on disaster resilience. At July's seminar, Tracie Sempier, coastal storms outreach coordinator with the National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration, will give a presentation on coastal resilience. Other guest speakers will be Dave Treutel of Smart Home America and Mike Grote of the Gulf Coast Community Design Studio. Treutel will speak on insurance incentives for fortified homes, and Grote will discuss dry flood-proofing existing and new construction.
In August, Allison Anderson of Unabridged Architecture will discuss wind and impact resistance at community shelters, and Patrick Sparks of Sparks Engineering will talk about adapting historic structures for wind and flood. September's seminar will feature Buck Abbey from Louisiana State University, who will discuss sustainable landscape design and coastal living, and David Perkes from Mississippi State University, whose topic will be new models for FEMA transitional housing.
