As reconstruction and recovery efforts from the 2011 Great East Japan Earthquake, the tsunami and Fukushima nuclear accidents progress it is critical to ensure that ecosystems are not further degraded by the reconstruction and recovery plans. Additionally, it is important to integrate ecosystems as part of the recovery, reconstruction and preparedness solutions.
In order to support countries in addressing these challenges, the Partnership for Environment and Disaster Risk Reduction (PEDRR) and WWF US training toolkit on green recovery and reconstruction (GRRT) have designed a Training Course on Ecosystem-based Disaster Risk Reduction for Sustainable Development aimed at strengthening resilience at national and local levels. The training will be conducted by IUCN, UNU, ADPC, UNEP and WWFUS amongst relevant Government, non-government, research and private sector representatives.
The objectives of the training course are
•Address Environmental sustainability and disaster resilience questions by sustaining livelihoods and managing the longer term climate change impacts;
•Promote and catalyze institutional change towards integrating ecosystem-based disaster risk reduction into development planning at national and sub-national levels;
•Produce an Agenda for Action on longer term planning and commitments to ecosystem based solutions for risk reduction, recovery and reconstruction.
