Global Platform for disaster risk reduction 2009: Second session

  • Type: Meeting or Conference
  • Date: 16-18 Jun 2009
  • Location: Switzerland (Geneva)
  • Venue: International Conference Centre Geneva (ICCG)

Description

The Global Platform provides the main global forum for representatives of governments and other stakeholders - UN agencies, regional bodies, international financial institutions, civil society, the private sector and the scientific and academic communities – to:

1. Assess progress made in implementation of the Hyogo Framework for Action.
2. Enhance global awareness of disaster risk reduction.
3. Share experiences among countries and learn from good practice.
4. Identify remaining gaps and actions needed to accelerate national and local implementation of the Hyogo Framework.

The goal of the Global Platform for Disaster Risk Reduction, as the main body of the strengthened ISDR system, is to sustain world-wide momentum to build the resilience of nations and communities to disasters.

The Global Platform website will be regularly updated to provide up-to-date information on the programme, organization of side events and displays, as well as practical information for participants on the 2nd session. This website will also act as a portal to centralize, compile and disseminate session documents, inputs and contributions during the preparation phase.

Queries may also be sent to the ISDR secretariat at the following e-mail address: globalplatform@un.org.

Target audience

Representatives of governments, UN agencies, regional bodies, international financial institutions, civil society, private sectors, scientific and academic communities.

How to register

Participation in the Global Platform is by invitation from the Under-Secretary-General of the United Nations for Humanitarian Affairs, Mr. John Holmes, in his capacity as Chair of the ISDR system.

All Member States of the United Nations will be invited to send representatives. In addition, invitations will be sent to concerned UN agencies, regional bodies and international financial institutions as well as representatives of civil society, the private sector and the scientific and academic communities. Organizations which received invitations to attend the 1st session in June 2007 should expect to again receive invitations to participate in the 2nd session in June 2009.

Requests for participation by other expert organizations will be considered on a case-by-case basis. Given the nature and purpose of the Global Platform, participation is limited. Only organizations which have demonstrated a strong and continued engagement in disaster risk reduction and implementation of the Hyogo Framework for Action, including involvement in ISDR platforms, clusters and the working groups, and which have wide representation and outreach at international and/or regional level will be considered.

The venue International Conference Centre Geneva (ICCG) will also be available for selected meetings and side events on Monday 15 June and on Friday 19 June 2009.
