The Office of Disaster Preparedness and Emergency Management (ODPEM) in Kingston, Jamaica, will be observing Disaster Preparedness Month in June under the theme, “Disasters are a Constant Reality … Be Prepared For Any Eventuality!”
During this time we aim to increase the general awareness of the Jamaican public to the importance of reducing our risk to those hazards that regularly affect the country through more active disaster preparedness measures. A series of activities have been planned for the month:
1. Press Conference to Launch Disaster Preparedness Month, June 2008
To officially launch the month of activities, the ODPEM will be holding a Press Conference in the ODPEM Conference Room on Friday, May 30, 2008 from 10:00 to 11:00 a.m. At the Press Conference members of the media will hear from the ODPEM and several of our partner agencies, including Mrs. Sylvia McGill, Director of the National Meteorological Service, who will present on the forecast for the 2008 hurricane season.
2. National Day of Prayer for Seventh Day Adventist Churches
This Day of Prayer will take place on Saturday, May 31, 2008. On this day we invite all Seventh Day Adventist churches across the nation to say a special prayer for God’s special intervention if and when an earthquake should occur.
3. National Church Service
This year’s Disaster Preparedness Month National Church Service will be held at the Old Harbour Bay Baptist Church, Old Harbour Bay, St. Catherine. The National Church Service will be held on Sunday, June 1, 2008 from 10:00 a.m. to 12 noon. This will be aired live on Love 101 FM.
4. ODPEM Outside Broadcast (OB) on Hot 102 FM
Our second OB for the Month will be held on Monday, June 2, 2008 in the ODPEM conference room during “Today with Beverly Anderson-Manley” on Hot 102 FM.
5. Disaster Preparedness Day in Schools
This is an annual hazard awareness day that will be held on Thursday, June 5, 2008. On this Day, schools are encouraged to make their students more aware of the types of hazards that affect Jamaica and also to involve them in hazard awareness activities such as creating original items in dance, drama, song and poetry to express themselves about their vulnerabilities to all types of disasters.
6. Disaster Preparedness Cultural Exchange
The Disaster Preparedness Cultural Exchange is an annual event that is a part of Disaster Preparedness Day in Schools. This event involves several schools, under one roof, showcasing cultural items in dance, drama, song and poetry about Jamaica’s vulnerability to particular natural and man-made hazards and how to better prepare for these hazards. This year’s Exchange will take place on Thursday, June 5, 2008, from 10:00 a.m. to 12 noon at the Obistan Kinderprep School on Washington Boulevard, who will play host to neighbouring schools.
7. Hurricane Preparedness Week for Businesses
Hurricane Preparedness Week for Businesses will be held from June 9 – 13, 2008. This year the ODPEM will focus on the petroleum industry and will conduct sensitization sessions with all relevant personnel to better prepare this crucial industry for the 2008 hurricane season.
8. ODPEM/Gleaner Disaster Preparedness Month Supplement
Once again, in partnership with the Gleaner Company, the ODPEM will publish its first Disaster Preparedness Month Supplement on Thursday, June 24, 2008.
9. Annual Hurricane Preparedness Expo
The annual Hurricane Preparedness Expo will be held on Saturday, June 21 and will be held at the Portmore Mall.
10. ODPEM/Jamaica Observer Disaster Preparedness Month Supplement
Once again, in partnership with the Jamaica Observer Ltd., the ODPEM will publish its second Disaster Preparedness Month Supplement on Tuesday, June 27, 2008.
