This training course is FEMA certified. This 2-day course will provide an introduction to volcanic crises and will enhance the participants' ability to support their organizations' preparedness and response efforts for future volcanic crises. It provides an understanding of:
• Processes, impacts, and causes of volcanic hazards
• Current monitoring and hazard assessment tools and products
• Volcano warning and dissemination systems and methods
• Community response to eruptions and volcanic crises
In the final module, students will participate in a facilitator-led scenario-based group activity that challenges them to identify effective actions that will reduce the impact of a volcanic crisis in their communities. In these activities, participants apply their knowledge of the presented materials to actual preparedness, mitigation, and response issues. Through these exercises they come to understand how organizational preparedness and community-level planning support the mitigation of volcanic hazards.
Government/public decision makers, emergency managers, response personnel, planners, and other professionals in both public and private sectors with tsunami preparedness, mitigation and/or response responsibilities. Most participants will come from state and local government agencies, non-governmental organizations (NGOs), higher education, and private industry.
