Background
For all countries, climate change is a major challenge which needs to be addressed at every level and in all sectors of society. Public sector organizations need to take account of potential impacts on people and the physical environment in planning, delivering and maintaining the services on which economic activity and social interactions rely. For the private sector, there is evidence that climate change impacts will affect almost every aspect of business, but that forward planning can minimize threats and maximize opportunities, as well as offering market leadership benefits.
Outline
This course deals with the strategic planning needed to adapt to and cope with the impacts of climate change. It provides you with the knowledge and skills to make educated decisions for your organization and your community. Explore the causes and impacts of global warming; government policies and the economics of climate change; strategic planning to respond to and minimize climate change; and the financial, environmental and business aspects of mitigation efforts.
The view of the course material and subjects will be as wide and comprehensive as possible and should not focus solely on one country, socio-economic stratum, or area of adaptation. Participants are encouraged to stretch their knowledge and understanding beyond their own areas of immediate experience and expertise. Participants are also encouraged to look beyond the “technical” or operational aspects of adaptation and to pay particular attention to issues of equity, governance, transparency, and sustainable development.
