School safety initiative: Drought

This factsheet in the "School Safety Initiative" series presents drought as a natural phenomenon that is considered a disaster when lack of water becomes critical for humans, animals or plant life. The various problems associated with drought are described. Water is not only vital to sustain life, but also for transport and industry. Like other disasters, vulnerability to drought can be lessened through behaviour change. Water conservation is the simplest measure to prepare for, or prevent, a drought. Maintaining vegetative cover and creating water storage reservoirs are effective drought prevention strategies. The factsheet presents rainwater harvesting and tubewell recharge as an appropriate technology for users of this guide.
