This leaflet is a contribution to the International Decade for Natural Disaster Reduction 1990-2000. The role of the OEA and of ECHO in the field of the reduction of vulnerability of school buildings to natural hazards is to increase government, public awareness of the necessity to "better forecast than regret". This role is important considering the fact that children spend a long time in them and that they serve as meeting/refuge places. It also defines the mitigation activities for the various parts of the educational sector and offers some information on natural hazards and school buildings. (UNEsCO)
