This information card describes the work of the Istituto nazsionale di Geofisica e vulcanologia (INGV), established in 1999 through the merging of various scientific institutes and observatories operating in geophysics and volcanology research. Its main mission is the monitoring of geophysical phenomena in both the solid and fluid components of the Earth. This includes the development and maintenance of the necessary instrumention and infrastructures, as well as real-time surveillance, early warning and forecast activities. In cooperation with selected Italian universities, INGV develops higher education programs. Public outreach is part of its activities through publications, scientific exhibitions and the Internet.
