Y Care International’s Disaster Preparedness Planning Guide and accompanying Toolkit when used together offer a step by step process for participatory disaster preparedness planning. Originally designed for YMCAs in at risk countries the process and tools outlined in the Guide and Toolkit apply to any small to medium sized civil society organisation looking to build their capacity in the area of disaster response through effective planning.

The Toolkit provides details of activities for facilitators that put into practice the process explained in the Guide. It includes 17 participatory activities and tools (based on common PRA tools) intended to support learning, encourage discussion and analyse information related to disaster preparedness. It also contains 13 tables and templates designed to help present information gathered through the course of the participative activities for inclusion in the written disaster preparedness plan.

When used together, the Guide and Toolkit provide practical support in developing context specific plans through a participatory process.

The guidance and tools are not limited to any particular region, country, or type of disaster. Organisations looking to use these resources would however benefit from prior experience of using participatory research and analysis tools. The Guide and Toolkit are also available in Spanish, French and English hard copies by contacting the source organisation.
