The programme is built on a core of social science courses that help students approach the study of disasters and emergency management from a sociological perspective. The program also draws from other disciplines that enhance the development of processes and techniques that help to mitigate hazards deal with disasters and manage emergencies. Students are required to complete a thesis for dissertation and defend the same in an oral exam. A research advisor will be assigned by the university, commensurate with the research interests of the student.

Students must satisfy the admission requirements for the master's degree and have a master’s degree in emergency management or related field. Students not meeting the above admission standards may be required to enroll in 6-10 graduate credit hours and achieve a cumulative GPA in these classes of 3.0 for full-standing admission into the program. Students not meeting these standards will be evaluated and possibly placed on conditional status. For further details please see admission manual.
Completed application for Graduate School Admission, Official copies of transcript (grade report) are required from each college or university - including all undergraduate and graduate work, transcripts are to be submitted in a sealed envelope from the issuing institution. For international students, certified English translations must also be included, a $35 application fee and $10 processing fee. International applicants must pay an additional $15 transcript evaluation fee, statement of purpose outlining reasons for pursuing graduate study, Test scores, as required by programme; letters of recommendation are required from persons familiar with academic achievements. Graduate Assistantships are awarded with the specific intent to assist faculty members with the responsibilities of course instruction and research.
