Don’t be scared, be prepared: how disaster preparedness can save lives and money

This briefing paper argues that inexpensive and effective ways can keep tragedy from hitting hard. For example, had people been warned along the coastlines of the Indian Ocean, tens of thousands would have been saved from the tsunami in 2004. It also gives recommendations to respond when disaster strikes, but also to look beyond the immediate crisis, to understand the real causes of disaster and take preventative action.
