This working paper provides an overview of climate change mitigation-adaptation inter-relationships relating to bioenergy systems and bioenergy trade based on the situation in the Nordic countries. It argues that analysis of climate adaptation implications of bioenergy trade is important in the context of increasing international characteristics of bioenergy markets and global aspects of the bioenergy supply chains.
The main challenges presented in the paper include: increased prevalence of droughts and pests that can impact cultivation systems for energy crops, and warmer winters that can reduce the need for bio-based heating and fuel supply systems that can be disrupted by flash floods. The paper concludes that increased understanding of the inter-relationships between bioenergy markets and climate change risks and responses is imperative to ensure long-term sustainability of bioenergy as a valuable component in low-carbon futures.
