This brochure introduces the International Flood Initiative (IFI), which overall aim is to build capacity in countries to understand and better respond to floods by taking advantage of their benefits while at the same time minimizing their social, economic and environmental risks. It aims to address existing management gaps through a holistic approach and to provide a platform for further collaborative efforts.
IFI is intended to assist countries to meet the Millennium Development Goals (MDGs), to contribute to the UN International Decade for Action “Water for Life” (2005-2015) and the UN Decade on Education for Sustainable Development (2005-2014), as well as to address the issues identified in the Hyogo Framework of Action (2005- 2025).
Building on past cooperative successes, this initiative was launched by the United Nations Education, Scientific and Cultural Organization (UNESCO) and the World Meteorological Organization (WMO).
